About

Professor of Leadership and Organisational Change, Cranfield School of Management, with over 25 years’ experience spanning research, consultancy and senior advisory work. My work focuses on how outcomes are shaped in complex, high-stakes environments, particularly where coordination across boundaries, resilience under pressure and sustained change matter most.

I work with executive teams, regulators and system owners across all sectors, including energy, transport, infrastructure, healthcare, financial services, housing and defence. Experience includes advisory and diagnostic work with organisations such as Shell, Siemens, EDF, HSBC, ITV, TJX, Handtmann, Markerstudy, Network Rail, the NHS, the Scottish Housing Regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority, the Care Quality Commission, alongside Deloitte, UK government and national resilience bodies.

Alongside organisational work, I contribute to policy, standards and system-level advisory activity on resilience and preparedness, including the National Preparedness Commission, UK Cabinet Office / National Resilience Strategy, GO-Science foresight, the Business of Resilience Taskforce, and UK and international standards on organisational resilience (BS 65000 and ISO 22316).  

My work has been showcased by both the Academy of Social Sciences (read the case study) and the Economic and Social Research Council (read the case study) as an exemplar of excellence in research impact. In 2012 HR Magazine voted me UK’s ‘Most Influential Thinker’. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, the British Academy of Management and the CIPD, recognised as one of HR Magazine’s Most Influential Thinkers. My research has attracted over 40,000 citations.

My work is diagnostic-led and evidence-informed, focused on understanding how decisions, coordination and behaviour combine to produce outcomes in practice, and where targeted redesign of governance or coordination will make the greatest difference.
